Smong is an oral tradition that developed on Simeulue Island and has been passed down from generation to generation as a form of disaster mitigation for smong (tsunami). Smong is one of the manafi-nafi (traditional teachings) conveyed by parents to their children while harvesting cloves, after Quranic lessons, and as a bedtime story. The transmission of smong has evolved over time in response to changing circumstances. Today, smong is conveyed through Mananga-nanga and the Nandong performing art, as well as through songs and poetry.
